THE GOOD STUFF;;
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
Alric is from a species of alien known as the Sol’Tekkrans. Despite that, it’s very easy for him to pass as a human, as the two species are very similar in physical development. They key difference between the two species is that the Sol’Tekkrans are herbivores, as opposed to humanity’s omnivorous physiology. The only noticeable outward difference is that his species has teeth that are all made to grind, like the rear teeth in humans. Their primary source of energy comes from the sugars produced by the photosynthetic process. His kind cannot digest meat, and consumption of such material causes digestive problems best left described. The digestive system is different to accommodate for the plant matter, and their hearts are on the opposite side of the body compared to humans. Skin tones vary between individuals, but darker skin tones are the norm, due to the planet’s high exposure to the light from its sun.
Removing fashion sense from the equation, Alric’s most striking feature would be his eyes. His pale skin and blonde hair, while light enough to stand out in most environments, are also pale. His eyes are a vibrant blue, and dark enough to deeply contrast the rest of his features. He has notably high and prominent cheekbones, and strong, angular facial features. Some are more likely to draw their attention to the facial tattoo that happens to run along the left side of his face. Comprised of sweeping lines that end in sharp points, two above and two below his eye, they represent the ever-stretching roots of a tree, and are a marker of caste within his own society. While not an entirely static feature, his hair is very often spiked up along the top and front of his head, making for a hairstyle that has reminded some of his more critical observers of a cockatiel.
Alric, perhaps due to youthful enthusiasm, proudly wears his colors boldly in public. A lack of need to keep a secret identity, and pride in his calling, have both giving him the confidence to not even use the typical domino mask utilized by the more secretive heroes. He wears a combination of green and black, with some accenting done through various metals. His short-sleeved jacket would be most distinctive, especially since it looks to have been made far shorter than needed. Green dominates the bottom half of the chest and back, while black comprises the sleeves and upper body. A large grey-white collar finishes off a rather distinctive jacket. His cargo pants can be seen as unique too, but only because the vibrant shade of green is very unusual in modern fashion. He has metal-banded gloves for fighting, though the metal does not cover the striking surface of his fist, instead functioning on the back of his hands for the deflection of bladed weapons.
PERSONALITY:
Alric is a young man who holds himself like he was made for the job of defending the innocent, which is entirely true. He had a rigid and dedicated upbringing towards the eventual goal of becoming a Green Lantern. Since he has, effectively, achieved that goal, he can’t help but be proud of it, and the duties that he’s inherited. Fighting and hard work are cornerstones of his training, and it’s rare to hear him complain about working in any serious fashion. Even if he did complain, it’d probably be empathically or jokingly, as his pride and good spirits keep him positive in even the most dire of circumstances. This has led to some believing that he doesn’t take his duties seriously enough, but jokes and self-assurance are his defense mechanisms against such dangerous things as depression, fear, and hopelessness. It is his ability to grin in the face of overwhelming adversity that makes him a viable Green Lantern cadet.
His youth, and the accompanying lack of real experience, allow him to carry on in a happy manner. Seemingly carefree and accused of being a goofball, he is quick to make friends with the willing, and occasionally abrasive to the less positively inclined. His most notable quirk might be his need to always be doing something in a physical sense, leading most to believe he’s hyperactive. His species uses sugars as their primary source of energy, and so he is constantly energetic. But that comes with a frequent need to eat, and a lack of proper nutrition can quickly bring him to a state of depressing lethargy. Essentially, he’s one big sugar rush waiting to flatline.
While his energetic fits can lead to some thinking him a hyper active buffoon, especially when paired with his penchant for lame jokes and enthusiasm, he isn’t so bad when it comes to thinking either. His mother didn’t raise a fool, and the Cadet is certainly capable of holding his own in a contest of intellect. On the flip-side, he’s not a genius. His smarts come mostly from an ability to take in and react to situations. If he’s asked to solve and riddle or puzzle, he’ll have no problem, but if he’s asked what the capital of Alabama is, he’d be likely to answer with the letter “A.”
POWERS AND/OR ABILITIES:
Racial Aspects: Alric’s species uses sugars as their primary energy source during their waking hours. Their bodies are adapted to the constant heightened level of short-term energy. This gives his species a comparatively higher level of natural endurance, and Alric is an exemplary member of his species. The inclination toward eating plants has also led to a high metabolism, and a natural resistance to toxins and diseases.
Personal Aspects: Alric is a strong member of his species in all physical capacities. This puts him at a physical level on par with well-trained human. He doesn’t excel in any physical aspect, save endurance due to his race’s natural abilities. Mentally, he brings a strong deductive reasoning and improvisational skill to the metaphorical table. Being trained to be something akin to a police officer, he’s both quick to act, and clear of thought in even the most stressful situations. His own willpower is impressive, but that is something one would expect from a member of the Green Lantern Corps.
Green Lantern Ring: Well-known, the Green Lantern Ring contains the power to create complex hard-light constructs. Limited merely by the bearer’s imagination and willpower, its power has yet to have a true limit. They also enable the bearer to fly, travel in harsh environments safely, and even travel through hyperspace. It can even generate the Corps uniform when activated. The ring can even provide information and advice to its bearer, or translate any of a vast multitude of languages stored in the main power battery on Oa. Its computer-like intelligence is even programmed with a few basic functions that it activates on its own, like life support for unconscious Lanterns, and the ability to recall itself back to Oa when its bearer dies.
WEAKNESSES:
Personal: Alric’s species relies on the short-term energy provided by sugars found in plants. This means he has to eat roughly three times as often in order to regulate his energy properly. The amount needed is less though, and is roughly equal to a human diet in terms of volume consumed. Without this stable intake of sugar, his kind are prone to becoming lethargic and experience debilitating energy crashes. It takes about an hour after eating in order for his kind to recover from such a state. Their diet also makes meat something toxic to their kind. The trade-off for their strong immune systems is that consuming meat will give them unpleasant, and equally debilitating stomach problems.
Being that he is an alien, he isn’t that great with the local customs and history. This has led to him being clueless or misinformed in regards to those he needs to protect. It can lead to social awkwardness despite his best intentions, and his friends are far fewer than he’d like. He is still vulnerable to an overwhelming sense of fear, not having had a chance to face what is a Lantern’s greatest challenge.
Lantern Ring: One of the most famous of the Lantern Ring’s weaknesses is the limited charge of energy that it utilizes. The ring has to be recharged every twenty-four hours, though feats of extreme determination and effort can drain the power substantially. Generally, it isn’t a problem until the ring-bearer has gotten into an extended period of time without access to the lantern that serves to collect and transfer the energy that powers the rings. The other big weakness is the inability to affect yellow objects. Indirect methods can still manipulate yellow objects though. A sufficiently powerful Lantern who has gone through a particularly harrowing event, and overcome the debilitating effects of their deepest fears, can overcome the inability to manipulate yellow objects. Alric is not one of those few, honored, Lanterns.
Finally, the Green Power Ring cannot be used to kill, no matter the willpower of the bearer. They always limit themselves to leaving a struck being with just enough energy to survive. However, this is hardly a big problem for a heroic being.
GOALS:
Ascension: Being “The Green Cadet,” it is clear that Alric is still learning to use his power. Fights leave him more tired than others might expect, and his constructs aren’t as great, nor as diverse as some demonstrated by human Green Lanterns. Of course, he seeks to remedy such distinction between him and the other members, so that he can prove he’s worthy of the ring he’s inherited.
Camaraderie: While powerful in his own right, Alric is a social creature at heart, and doesn’t like being alone. He’d prefer to become a member of a team, so that he can have allies to both rely on, and keep him from getting too grim. To him, there’s no point in being a hero if you don’t have an emotional investment in those that you protect.
HISTORY:
The planet Sol’Tekkra is a largely forested planet, where the people revere the sun for the protection and guidance that it gives the planet’s inhabitants. While science on the planet has effectively disproved their sun as the resting place of their deity, they are no less religiously tied, and their spirituality has become entangled with their scientific progress. Their first Crops member inherited the power a mere three generations before Alric, and the power of the Green Lantern’s light is seen as a blessing from the divine. Those three generations all belong to the same direct family line, the possession of the Green Power Rings seeking the only child of each older parent.
As the fourth Lantern from Sol’Tekkra, the hereditary possession of the ring was destined to go to either Alric, or his brother. The two were born fraternal twins, and so both were raised to be ready for the ring to choose them. They trained side-by-side, in both schooling and extra-curricular physical work so that when the power came to them, they’d be ready for both the taxing work, as well as the great duties that were required of a ring-bearer. The rivalry was certainly competitive, and revealed the true nature of both children. Alric took the challenge in stride, pushing himself to greater heights every time he was defeated by his brother. But his brother was bitter about his defeats, and sought immediate chances to prove his superiority.
When the first Sol’Tekkran Lantern passed away in the line of duty, it was at the latest of nights, and a dark day for their race. When the streak of green light fell upon the surface of the planet, it was a mere half mile from the brothers, whom were readying themselves for another had-to-head challenge. Instead, the landing site of the ring provided the challenge for them. With a confident laugh, Alric took the initiative to start their race. While his brother didn’t seem to be able to catch up, his brother had other plans in store. Alric’s brother threw a baton square into the back of Alric’s head, causing the unaware runner to collapse and lose a hopeless amount of distance. Without hesitation, he picked himself up and raced after his brother, determined to catch up and give him a good what for.
He arrived on the scene of the crash, only to see the ring in his brother’s hands. Before his brother was able to put the ring on, it instead made a choice for itself and flew out of the hands that grasped it, giving itself to Alric, despite losing the race. Alric wasted no time in putting it on, the ring guiding him to Oa even as his brother was halfway through a yell of protest.
Once on Oa, he was given an introductory version of “Boot camp,” learning quickly that the ring was a power far beyond the ordinary person. His youth and inexperience had the few that he met unimpressed, feeling that the ring was wasted on someone so young. But his determination won over his observers just enough to allow him something of a probationary period with the ring. He’d be sent to a place where he could be easily monitored, and where others would be able to compensate for his shortcomings while he was still learning the ropes. A place already stationed by senior members, with varying degrees of frequent crisis that he could build his skills up from, and a place where there were many beings stronger than him.
A place called Earth.

A ringing tone slowly faded from Alric’s ears, replaced by his own pained groan while he picked himself up from a rather unforgiving stone ground. He was too used to the soft dirt floors of his home world, and being smacked into the ground just a moment ago had been less than pleasant. As the pained cadet got halfway to his feet, a voice in his own head told him to watch out to his left. It didn’t really say, so much as just feel like he had been told what was happening. Despite his dazed state, he turned himself and projected a shell of green light that intercepted the head of a massive, green hammer that collided with the shield in a resounding thud. Another instinct told him to watch his feet.
But his sluggish recovery from the earlier blow made him question those odd instincts, and Alric soon felt the clamp of metal –like bindings enclosing his legs, leaving him hopelessly pinned while the hammer arced back for another big swing. ”You’re not listening. You need to listen.” A gruff, booming voice reached his ears for real. The instructor’s voice. It practically shook the stone they fought on, and it did not seem pleased.
“Listen to what!?” Alric projected a massive fist to intercept the hammer as it came for him, pushing it far off course, but hardly deterring it from homing in on a new path. Worse yet, the impact looked like it had damaged the fist, a web of cracks forming where the hammer had met the rookie’s construct.
”Your constructs are faltering already. You aren’t worthy of the ring.” The voice boomed again as the hammer drove straight for the youth.
Alric couldn’t get out of the way, and it seemed he didn’t have the strength to stop the attack. The binding on his legs was overwhelming. It took a split second for him to recall a choice bit from his martial arts training, and summoned a hammer of his own, slamming down on the attacking thing before it would collide with his body. Instead, the downward force made it collide with the hard-light that surrounded his legs. The constructs made by the monstrous instructor shattered against each other, but not before bowling Alric off his feet once again.
Up. Alric turned his eyes skyward, watching as a big, very heavy-looking prism formed above him. The cadet immediately raised his ring up towards the block, as massive root-like constructs burst from the stone around him, and curled over him protectively. The weighty block smashed into the barrier, held aloft by the focused willpower that went into Alric not wanting to be crushed by a giant weight. Another weight was forming above the first, but the young cadet was quick to strike, another tendril of root-like light rising up to land a solid uppercut into the instructor’s jaw. The massive guy only stepped back once, and moved his head back into place with a sickening cracking in his neck.
”Don’t tell me that’s all you got? At least it didn’t break this time, Poozer…”
