TOMONARI JOSHUA CAHAL
(No icons, sadly.)
To send my deepest prayers to you, I'll keep on singing today...
"When you're in a town like this all covered with smoke, you forget that there's a world outside. Nothing amazing happens here. And you get used to that, used to a world where everything is ordinary. Every day we spend here is like a whole lifetime of dying slowly."- Quote taken from Naota Nandaba of the anime FLCL.

THE GOOD STUFF;;
No Image.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Generally a standard height, he is five feet and eight inches tall. Looking like a rather typical 'nerd' or 'geek' sort, he is pretty much thin with nothing about the boy that looks intimidating. However, he doesn't smell like potato chips, nor does he have acne all over his face (really due to the fact that he has a sense of hygiene), but that doesn't mean one or two won't pop up here and there. With that, Tomonari also wears a pair of black, thin framed, rectangular shaped glasses. If he doesn't have these, well, forget about him being able to see anything. His eyes are green in color, and his hair is brown. As for his hair, it is pretty long, with a ponytail that reaches about halfway down his back. Tomonari's bangs only reach down to his eyebrows (which are rather thick), and on each side of his head, about where his sideburns would be, is an extension of hair that is about the length of his head.
His skin color for the most part is essentially the darkest a human being can have normally, meaning dark grey or near black, as both describe the boy's skin color well enough. He typically wears clothing such as long sleeved shirts and somewhat baggy jeans, a suit jacket usually worn over the current, long sleeved shirt. His basic attire, as strange as it is, consists of a light blue, long sleeved shirt, with a grey suit jacket worn over that. The suit jacket is open in the front, as he usually does not button it up. Tomonari's green jeans are held up by a brown belt with a grey buckle. Obviously, he isn't one to dress in the 'current' fashions and what not. As for his shoes, they are white with two, solid black stripes going across each shoe, which instead of being laced together, are merely zipped up. Granted, Tomonari has to know how to tie laces, just in case.
He wears a tan satchel, with the strap starting at his right shoulder, and going across his body diagonally to the actual 'bag' part, which rests on his left side. Inside his satchel are a couple books and a frying pan, as well as smaller things such as extra sheets of paper, pens, and pencils. Sometimes with him is a tan, acoustic guitar which is also carried by its own strap. The guitar rests on Tomonari's back, with the strap going diagonally in the opposite direction of the satchel's. This creates a 'X' shape of sorts, for lack of better terms.
Quite frankly, he really doesn't have any sort of 'costume' of sorts... although that is due to the fact that he doesn't go about being a hero or something.
PERSONALITY: The first, and most obvious, thing about Tomonari upon meeting him, is that he is a rather timid teenager. His speech patterns involve quite a bit of stuttering, which may at times require him speaking some thought at least once more. However, he still tries to make sure his words are audible. It is also a common habit of his to apologize often, even if something was not his own fault, as well as thinking an apology is needed when it is not in general. Due to this, Tomonari’s own confidence is quite low, which makes him quite uncomfortable when speaking to strangers. This factor ties into the difficulty of putting Tomonari and brave in the same sentence. Granted, he won’t become frightened to extremes by something such as a gentle, accidental bump into someone, but other things such as an angry dog chasing him, will.
Although this may tie in with this timid personality, Tomonari is often worried about the things around him. For example, he quite often tends to make a conversation with someone he meets short, and attempts to make an excuse to get out of it. He isn’t a very good liar, however, so these attempts are easy to spot. His worry also tends to cause him to have short OCD moments, meaning a chore such as cleaning dishes may take him ten minutes longer than necessary. These aren’t often though, so it thankfully doesn’t warrant as a significant medical condition. It does tend to follow more into his homework more often though. When it comes to the actual world around him is when his worry acts up more, leading into the timid side of him. Tomonari is rather unsure about things, no matter how much reads up on a subject. When it comes down to it, he’s book smart, not street smart.
Despite these personality traits, he tends to be more polite on a regular basis. He clearly knows how to be respectful of people, and will try his best to make sure he doesn’t talk badly about someone, despite what his innermost thoughts and feelings are. This can be a downside, as if he does not speak what he is feeling, it may cause more trouble than he thinks. At times this can tie into Tomonari being rather responsible, and he makes sure he does things such as being on time for a meeting, cooking something properly, among other things. However, whether or not this involves itself with his actions is somewhat of a different idea, as at times there is still the sense of being unsure about things lingering there.
When it comes down to it though, he does have his own likes and dislikes, some of which can be quite helpful. Granted, some are assuming he opens up to someone about them. One of the top favorites of his is reading, and not just for school study. Tomonari will often come back to a novel after reading it once, especially if he enjoyed it. Mystery and detective based novels are a preferred area of fiction (although it’s a good ratio of hits and misses when it comes to him figuring out the culprit(s)). Despite not looking like the kind of guy who involves himself with sports, baseball seems to be something else he enjoys, assuming he gets the chance to play it. He won’t be talking about things like the latest scoreboard in a professional game and such, but offer him the chance to play for fun, and he’ll be rather tempted to join.
As for a more musical side of him, he generally enjoys music. Granted, he isn’t particularly fond of things such as rap and hip-hop, but orchestrated and rock sorts of genres are among what Tomonari can be caught listening to. Although, don’t expect things like ‘heavy metal’ and ‘death metal’ from him. This has led him to eventually pick up learning to play an acoustic guitar. He’ll often be heard playing it when alone, and when reading at times. It helps that he’s been practicing for a good four years. When it comes down to it though, perhaps nothing will beat his love for cooking. More often than not he can be found being the one to cook family meals and such, no matter if it’s his turn or not. Currently taking electives to do so, Tomonari is planning on becoming a chef later on in life. Oh, and he especially loves lobster, so look out for that.
There are some general things to keep in mind when it comes to dislikes. For one, he isn’t fond of a dirty kitchen. This really has to do with food safety, and he doesn’t want people to get sick from contaminated food. Although swaring is something he tends to hear out of people’s mouths generally, Tomonari doesn’t particularly feel comfortable when around foul words. Following this, he isn’t much of a fighter, so physical fights are something that really makes him uncomfortable being around. However, the big thing that really bothers him is such: Tomonari feels some sort of loose chain in his heart (figuratively), and despite wanting to fix it, he doesn’t know how to fill that gap up. Rather, he isn’t sure what to do exactly with this, it being a lesson he will probably learn with experience.
POWERS AND/OR ABILITIES:
--- Magic: His first power is his magical abilities. Granted, he isn't extremely powerful, but through the use of a magical tome, Tomonari has the capability to use magic. The tome is more of a medium to make it easier, however, as he doesn't exactly have the energy to sustain many spells, most of which come from the tome anyhow. However, one of the most basic, non-spell magical abilites he has is creating a curved, teal blade of sorts, which is about the length of his forearm, assuming there is a need for close ranged combat. Aside from basic slashing, he can throw it in an arc like a boomerang, which can hit multiple opponents.
--- Spells: Next up are the three spells he actually knows. Note however, that the spells are partially in the Maori language (as an OOC note, as there is no Aboriginal Australian languages I could look up otherwise, Maori is my best bet here). The current list of spells is as follows:
- Wai Stream: Basically, he sends a stream of water to crush one opponent. It merely deals low, water elemental damage.
- Hauwhenua Breeze: Tomonari slashes at his opponent with a burst of green wind. Deals low, wind elemental damage. May trip his opponent temporarily.
- Tio Frost: A ball of ice is created, and shot at his opponent. This spell deals low, ice elemental damage. May slow down his opponent with frost.
--- Inhuman Speed: Next, he biologically has inhuman speed, capable of running up to 70 miles per hour. However, using this for too long can tire him out rather quickly, so it's only used in short bursts. This power works by having the ability to speed up the molecules in his body, causing this speed increase. For the most part, that is precisely why his inhuman speed tires him out easily.
--- Increased Reflexes: Really alongside his inhuman speed, his natural reflexes are increased, allowing him to dodge various attacks and the like easier. Of course, as with his speed, Tomonari can get tried out abusing this.
--- Life Preserver Spell: As for a more defensive ability, there is a magic spell tied to his own life that his mother had placed on him (through her own magic). Essentially, what it does is turn anything that would pierce his skin, burn him, etc, turn into nothing more than pain, so anything that would kill a human won't kill Tomonari. There ARE limits to this, however. For one, he will still feel pain as mentioned. There is also a limit to how much he can handle before going unconcious, thus making it more like a standard RPG.
--- Bardic Magic: Although this is rarely used, Tomonari can use his magic through singing or playing an instrument, usually his guitar. However... he isn't too good at it, so this isn't battle worthy really. At least, for now it isn't.
--- Emotion Sensing: As simple as it sounds. He has the ability to sense the emotions of others. It's not too useful at this moment, and he is unable to tell what causes some people to have a certain emotion. Of course, if it's obviously right in front of him (such as a joyful person with a new car), Tomonari would know. Otherwise... it's just sensing emotions right now. For the most part though, he is only able to detect the emotions of organic beings, not things such as robots.
WEAKNESSES:
- He can still get sick, get bones broken, etc. So his body is still rather human.
- Tomonari has low physical attributes, so his physical strength, defenses, and endurance isn't that high, thus tiring him out easily.
- When it comes to the 'Anti-Lethal' spell of sorts, it can be temporarily dispelled, despite it coming back after recovering. If it ever were to be dispelled, the fact that it's attatched to Tomonari's life means he will automatically tire out, even falling unconcious.
- Due to his timid personality, he can get scared quite easily. So frighten him enough, and he'll be scared stiff to the point where you can get this kid in a corner and do whatever you want. Either that or he'll flee from battle as fast as he can.
- Did I mention his lack of street smarts? Yep, he can be tricked on the street quite easily, although some things do hold Tomo back from doing something stupid. Granted... that doesn't necessarily mean he'll know what to do in that kind of situation. Book smart? NOPE, not helping him on the street at all!
- A severe lack of confidence. If it involves a book or something schoolwork related, Tomonari isn't bothered too much by this. However, various tasks can show what little confidence he has in himself, thus making things seem impossible.
GOALS: Sure, his life goal at the moment is to become a chef as his career, but... when it comes down to it, he isn't sure what he wants. In a sense, Tomonari's internal goals are likely to find a goal, and see through his struggles. Once he opens himself up, at least...
HISTORY: Tomonari was born in Brisbane, Australia, effectively making it his hometown. His parents were an Aboriginal Australian man named Dane Cahal, and a Japanese woman named Saotome Cahal. However, Tomonari's father was in the military at the time, and as such, didn't see the man much. In return though, it helped that the boy's grandfather, Sibald Cahal, lived with them. When it came to things by blood, Tomonari's family was naturally 'super powered', for lack of a better term. However, Tomonari himself seemed to have inherited more magical abilities from his mother, rather than the powers his father had.
During his infancy, as well as throughout his life in general, Tomonari first grew quite attatched to his mother, although this was seen as quite normal at first. It wasn't until he learned to crawl that he began to show off his shy traits. For example, whenever he was put down to play on his own, he would do so for a few moments, but then rush back over to his mother. Like normal babies though, he would cry if left alone for too long. Granted, after quite some time, Tomonari eventually grew to being comfortable around his grandfather, although he had a tendency to still go near his mother more often. The boy did in fact learn to understand who his parents were quite easily, but the problem remained of his relationship with his father.
Whenever his father came home for the short periods of time he could, Tomonari always avoided him. It seemed quite odd to him to find some man, despite being the same one, randomly come visit and be familiar with his family. This concept was difficult for the boy to understand, and although he never completely cut ties with his father, Tomonari avoided him for the most part. Now there were times when his father would try and spend time with him, but it didn't work out too well, and it seemed as though his father gave up in a way. However, unknown to Tomonari, his own father didn't really understand how to talk to the boy. When it comes down to it, their lack of understanding was a shared trait, although it was perhaps a negative one that neither of them worked on.
School became a slightly difficult issue when Tomonari was old enough to go. It took quite a bit of prodding to convince him that he had to go without his mother around, although thankfully, it only took a month before he was mostly alright with being at school on his own. The boy came to understand that school was necessary, and also became a bit distracted with reading, once he learned how to properly read, of course. This lead him to start reading more books outside of his own textbooks, eventually coming across the mystery genre. This was a rather simple interest, one that continues even in the present time. On the upside, Tomonari was generally well behaved during school, although this was really due to his timid nature.
Around the age of seven was when Tomonari's magical abilites came to be known. Thankfully, he didn't do anything such as destroy a house, but he did accidentally break a glass when his magic was let loose. More or less instantly, the boy was taught how to control his powers, his mother giving Tomonari the spellbook he currently has to this day. However, his training didn't last for too long, although the reasons for that wouldn't be known until later.
When he was eight years old, his father had decided to retire from the military, and therefore, it would mean the man would more or less be home much more often. Granted, Tomonari's father still got a job in order to support their family (it wasn't something fancy like being a police officer, however). At first, Tomonari wasn't too sure about this slightly different change in lifestyle. It still took time for the boy to get used to the idea of his father being around, but he eventually did come to terms with this. However, their relationship didn't really change all that much. The fact still remained that neither of them knew what to say to the other, and most attempts at talking to each other more or less ended up as nothing more than a few sentences exchanged.
At the age of nine years old, Tomonari came across two things, the first of these being baseball. He overheard talk of a little league baseball team, as well as watching some of the older kids playing baseball. Hesitant about it, the boy was convinced by his grandfather to go for it, if he really wanted to, and after some trying out and the like, he made it in. Granted, Tomonari wasn't a star player or anything of the sort, but it turned out that he could run, and run fast. That, and the fact that he was rather good at catching the ball made him great for the outfield. Aside from that, was the idea of cooking. Having watched his mother cook, and coming across the cooking shows on TV, Tomonari eventually became curious about it, and over time, came to enjoy helping his mother cook. Of course, he was allowed to use the stove yet, but he ended up learning at least something.
Soon after that came the day where his current self really started to grow. While the boy's mother was out, a villain (currently unknown to Tomonari), had attacked the area where his mother was. During the confrontation, Tomonari's mother had been killed, although reports did say there was a woman who was holding back the villain doing the damage. Despite it being something the boy doesn't think about, the villain would have had to be quite powerful in order to defeat, and kill, his mother (whose magic was also pretty strong). Once the news got around to the boy, Tomonari took this quite harshly. He didn't know how to react, aside from becoming extremely upset and crying over it. The couple weeks that passed after this moment are rather hazy (although with nothing importance happening), although for some reason or another, Tomonari, his father, and grandfather, all moved to Jump City.
For the next three years, he continued his life as normal, despite being the 'new kid' to Jump City. At the age of eleven, Tomonari wound up obtaining his liking of music, and as such, was given an acoustic guitar around Christmas. He also started taking both guitar and cooking lessons, which made his life quite busy, having to deal with baseball and school as well. It was when he was twelve years old that Tomonari really started to change, and it didn't have to do with pueberty. He overheard his father talking about the boy, and it seemed as though the man was rather stressed out. This was the catalyst for him to start thinking about what he was doing, and as rash of a decision it was, Tomonari decided to stop playing baseball, in order to focus on school more in an attempt to not have his father worry as much. He regretted this decision, although never really gave it thought afterwards.
More recently though, now being fifteen, Tomonari was helping his grandfather organize some things in the basement of their house. He ended up coming across a box of various things, such as newspaper clippings. After some time of looking at these out of curiousity, it was revealed that his grandfather was once a super hero himself. Being offered to know more about it, Tomonari kept this whole thing in mind, perhaps asking his grandfather some other day about the old man's career. Granted, Tomonari himself might not try the whole 'hero' thing himself, but at this point, he had an entire life ahead of him.
However, before he even opened that box, for some reason the box of his grandfather's stuff... seemed like it was opened recently...

Having strayed away from the usual scenery of the city, a teenage boy sat alongisde the bank of the Brisbane River, named after the exacty city in which it resides. Normally said teenager would've gone home by now, ready to do some more heavy reading. But today he got a call from home saying that he should take a break for a couple hours. This was from his grandfather, who was probably too happy most of the time. But Tomonari didn't complain about this, albeit feeling rather uncomfortable at times. Sure, the boy managed to get himself someplace quiet that would allow him to think, but the fact remained that he never really did anything like this. Each and every day he went through the same routine, not putting much thought into doing anything else.
That, and he wasn't sure how safe being out here alone was. It was a weird thought when one considered that he wasn't in the 'Outback' of Australia, and in a civilized area. But on the other hand, that didn't mean things wouldn't go bump in the night. Looking up at the sky for a few moments, Tomonari sighed as he continued his various thoughts from one end to the other. Perhaps he could do some reading here, it being a rather acceptable choice for some quiet time. Looking over at his satchel, which rested on the ground to his left, the teenager reached over, and began digging through it. The obvious things were still there, such as a textbook, a couple novels, notebooks, and even his case where he kept his digimon cards. Oddly enough though, he pondered about taking the case of cards out to look at.
For some strange reason, Tomonari had decided to look at the cards he had, despite not having any new ones. It was a bit interesting to him either way, so looking at his card multiple times wasn't a horrible idea. Besides it was something new which the teenager was a little glad he opened up to. Granted, it wasn't something that would do a complete and utter makeover of his current personality. Sighing, Tomonari began to look through his digimon cards in his hands. Most of them were of the beast or aquatic families, but there were a couple which were of others, such as Candlemon. Various cards were looked at, such as Leomon, Bearmon, Gomamon, and Swimmon. These were digimon he planned to use in his deck... assuming he actually played the card game with others.
Another strange thing happened as he came across another card. Tomonari had stopped his looking spree, and examined it for longer than he did the others. Such a card was the plant digimon, Floramon. It was of the Data attribute, and a Rookie level. When he first obtained this card, he did have a couple thoughts about putting it in his deck. However, it was more or less just an extra card he had. But now that he looked at it, there was a sense of attatchment to it. The boy wasn't sure how or why, but Tomonari didn't seem to care much when he came down to it. He began to have second thoughts about not putting it into his deck, and decided to make sure to find a place for it later.
Once more he paused to look at his surroundings. Everything around him was definately the same, not matter what he thought. Although things being the same meant that more or less everything was scary to Tomonari in some way, shape, or form. Sighing once more. he seemed to half zone out, but quickly returned to reality. He was having more second thoughts, this time about whether he should just head home now.
